Strategic review - mining services industry

Situation A private company had grown rapidly, reflecting both the resources boom and the owners opportunistic approach. In addition to organic growth, there had been four local acquisitions and a JV investment in a manufacturing plant in China.

Task Thirdman was engaged to identify key performance metrics for each business unit, agree targets and empower second tier of management to assume operational control. The over-arching goal was to free owners to focus on strategic opportunities and minimise risks for the group.

Action Designed strategic plan and forecasting templates, facilitated business unit planning meetings and consolidated outcomes. Prepared and presented group strategic profile report.

Result A consistent theme of discontent emerged around the two owners' conflicting approaches to running the business, leading to articulation of personal goals, clarity of the exit route and a strategic focal point for daily decisions.
